Moving to a new apartment can be time-consuming, stressful, and most of all-expensive. From costs of furniture, moving trucks, and appliances to make your apartment comfortable, the dollars add up quickly. Here are some easy and effective ways to cut down on costs while moving.
Transporting your belongings from your current home to your new apartment is unavoidable, but high prices can certainly be avoided with smart planning. First, speak with all friends and family member within the area to see if anyone is willing to lend a hand. If someone you know has a large SUV or pickup truck, you may be able to avoid spending money at all (make sure to buy them lunch for their help!). Unfortunately this is not an option open to everyone, but there are plenty of other ways to cut down on costs. Consolidating your belongings can help save space and time while moving. For example: if you have a dresser you plan on keeping, move the dresser filled with clothes to save space.
If you are renting a moving truck, plan on doing so during the week rather than the weekend – often prices will be much cheaper. If you are able to get someone to help, you can avoid paying movers. Many rental places also have lower rates for picking a truck up in the morning and returning it the same day, so try to get an early start. Make sure to get prices from a variety of truck rental companies; U-Haul is not the only one! Car rental chains such as Enterprise and Hertz often rent large cargo vans that work just as well.
Furnishing your new apartment is an important step in turning your apartment into a home. Buying new furniture can blow a hole in your budget very fast, so alternative measures should be utilized. First, try to contact the previous tenant of your new apartment before he or she moves out. See if there is anything currently in the apartment that you are interested in, and ask if you may buy anything from them. This is a great option because it saves you and them money on not having to move more items. You are likely to get a heavily discounted price on their used furniture, and sometimes they will offer certain pieces for free!
Craigslist is also a great way to find discounted furniture. While you may not want a used bed, items like dressers, coffee tables and desks are great items to purchase on the secondary market. Craigslist often lists items for free on the condition that you move it yourself; if you already have a moving truck this is a great option. There truly are some hidden gems to be found on Craigslist and similar secondary sites, however make sure you bring a friend when picking up these items for precaution.
One of the best options is to speak with family members and see if they have any old furniture they are willing to part with. That old table sitting in your parents basement, or set of folding chairs can be quickly turned into your new kitchen table while saving hundreds of dollars. Between all of these methods, you may be able to furnish your new apartment without having to purchase brand new furniture for inflated prices.
Appliances and Accessories
You will undoubtedly need more for your apartment than simply furniture, most notably in the kitchen. For those that like to cook: pots and pans, knives, blender, etc. will be needed. Even if you don’t fancy yourself a chef, basics like plates and silverware, a microwave and a toaster will still be necessary. This is where contacting relatives comes in handy. Parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, they all have old appliances stored away in the basement, possibly from decades ago. No matter, an old microwave and toaster will still get the job done, and who really needs those fancy new settings anyway! When it comes to dishes and silverware, you may need to collect from a few different relatives to mix and match, but moving on a budget is not always about style. If you can’t collect from relatives, consider stores like the Salvation Army and Walmart for cheap kitchen options, while avoiding high-end stores like Pottery Barn and Sur-Le-Table.
